Balls!

Unemployment, Business Day 14.

Lot of baseball today. Woke up and realized that most ball games were in the afternoon, so I watched the Phillies take on the Cubs for most of the afternoon. A close game, Phils win 6-4. Toward the end of the game, I decided to leave the house. Hopped in the car, went down to Coney Island to hit some balls in the batting cages. I had the Mets game on the radio on the way down, and the broadcasters were mention the increasingly heavy rain out at Shea, which worried me that the rain would move south to Brooklyn. Never happened, and I had a very leisurely time in the batting cages. They were empty, and I had free reign over whatever I wanted to hit. I mixed it up between fast and medium baseballs, hitting from both sides with varying degrees of success. For a lark, I stepped into the cage labelled "fast" and "curve." I didn't know which coin slot controlled which machine, so I put a token in and hoped for the curve ball. First ball blazed right by me before I even realized what happened. Two more swings and complete misses, and I considered just walking out. I noticed three young japanese kids looking at me. I didn't know whether it'd be more embarrassing to just walk out or to swing and miss at 14 balls in a row. They were coming at 85 mph, which some major leaguers don't even throw. Admittedly, the bad major leaguers, but still. Eventually, I got into a bit of a groove and hit about 7 in a row, all but one the opposite field, meaning I could barely catch up to them. the one I hit up the middle stung my hands something fierce. But I was pretty pleased with myself, sticking in there and doing better than I thought I would, showing a bit of determination. And really, here on Unemployment (Business) Day 14, that's all I can really hope for when I wake up every afternoon.
